Two hours outside of Munich lies Neuschwanstein Castle. It was build in the 1880s by King Ludwig II. The setting is magnificent. The Castle itself is situated atop a high hill looking over the lowlands; and behind the hills, lies the beautiful Alps. The Castle took almost 20 years to complete and cost, by todays standards, somewhere around $40 Billion dollars. The King only lived in the castle for 172 days before he mysteriously drowned in a lake with his psychiatrist. If you want to know more click here for the wiki.
Pictures inside the castle weren’t aloud. But every single wall was engulfed in artistic representation. Whether it be lavish paintings or ridiculously astounding wood carvings; everywhere you looked you get a sense why this cost as much as it did.
Additional stops along the way: Old Church
You may notice a resemblance of this castle to the one at Disney World in Orlando, FL, as it was the inspiration for the design. Below is a view from the lookout bridge.
